Taking Ownership – A Path to Growth
One of the most powerful lessons we can learn, both in school and in life, is how to take ownership of our actions. Whether you're a current CPDLF learner or you're considering joining our learning community, this is a skill that will serve you for a lifetime.
Let’s be honest, when something goes wrong, it’s tempting to point fingers. Maybe the internet was slow, the directions were confusing, or someone else distracted you. But true growth begins when we stop, reflect, and ask ourselves: “What could I have done differently?”
In the movie Rocky Balboa, there's a moment when Rocky tells his son that “it ain’t about how hard you hit—it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.” That quote is about ownership. Life will throw challenges your way, but it’s how you respond, how you take accountability, that defines your character.
As young learners, some decisions feel easy, what to eat for breakfast, which game to play. Others, like how to manage your time or how to respond to a disagreement, are much harder. And as you grow older, the weight of your decisions often becomes heavier. But here’s the good news: every decision you make is an opportunity to learn.
A Simple Process to Guide Your Decisions:
- Stop and Think – What’s really going on? What are your options?
- Weigh the Consequences – What could happen with each choice?
- Make a Choice – Use what you know to make the best decision you can.
- Take Responsibility – Own the outcome, whether it turns out well or not.
- Reflect and Learn – What can you take from this experience to grow?
Mistakes are not failures, they’re feedback. As Albert Einstein once said, “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.” So if you’ve made a mistake recently, you’re in good company! What matters most is what you do next.
At CPDLF, we support learners in becoming independent thinkers and responsible citizens. That means encouraging you to take ownership of your choices and giving you the space to reflect and improve.
I want to thank our current families for continuing to support your learners as they grow through these experiences. And to those considering CPDLF, we would love to partner with you in helping your child become confident, accountable, and ready for whatever comes next.
Let’s keep growing—mistakes and all.
