The Power of a Growth Mindset – A New Way to Look at Challenges
Have you ever tried something difficult, maybe learning a new instrument, trying out for a sport, or tackling a tough school subject, and thought to yourself, "I'm just not good at this"? If so, you're not alone. But here's the truth, just because something is hard now doesn't mean it will always be hard.
At CPDLF, we want every learner to understand the power of a growth mindset. A growth mindset is a way of thinking that can change how you approach learning, challenges, and even failure.
What is a Growth Mindset?
Psychologist Carol Dweck, who has studied motivation and learning for decades, defines a growth mindset as the belief that your abilities and intelligence can be developed through effort, good strategies, and help from others. This is in contrast to a fixed mindset, where you might believe that your skills are set in stone and can't really change.
Here's an example:
- A fixed mindset says, "I'm just bad at math."
- A growth mindset says, "I don't understand this yet, but I can get better if I keep practicing and ask for help."
Why It Matters
When you believe you can grow and improve, challenges become opportunities instead of threats. You stop worrying about showing weaknesses and start getting excited about learning something new.
Carol Dweck put it this way:
"In a growth mindset, challenges are exciting rather than threatening. So rather than thinking, 'Oh, I'm going to reveal my weaknesses,' you say, 'Wow, here's a chance to grow.'"
That shift in thinking can be the difference between giving up and breaking through.
What Happens When You Make a Mistake?
Think back to a time when you made a mistake. How did it feel? Did it stop you, or did it teach you something? At CPDLF, we believe mistakes are not the end; they're the beginning of growth. We all fall down. What matters most is how we get back up.
Just like an athlete, a musician, or an artist who practices every day to improve, learners grow when they:
- Ask questions,
- Try new strategies,
- Practice consistently, and
- Reflect on what they can do differently next time.
Mistakes Help Us Learn
Think back to a mistake you've made. Did it make you feel stuck—or did it help you figure out a better way? Everyone makes mistakes. What matters most is what you do next. As Carol Dweck reminds us:
"Your reaction to failure can have a major impact on whether you can sustain a can-do attitude."
When you bounce back and keep trying, you grow. And at CPDLF, you'll have support every step of the way as you learn to reflect, revise, and rise up stronger.
Mastery Learning: Practice, Grow, Repeat
At CPDLF, our mastery grading system is built around this very idea. You don't get just one shot at learning something. Instead, you can:
- Rework assignments as many times as needed,
- Continue to grow with each attempt, and
- Show your progress over time.
This system recognizes that learning is a process, not a one-time performance. And because growth doesn't look the same for everyone, we also give you a choice in how you demonstrate your learning. Whether it's through a written assignment, a video explanation, a creative project, or another format, you can show what you know in a way that works for you.
You Can Keep Getting Better
Whether you're new to CPDLF or have been part of our community for years, remember that your potential isn't fixed. It grows with effort, support, and a willingness to persevere, especially when things get tough.
Let this be the month you begin to embrace challenges, try new things, and celebrate every small step forward. We believe in your ability to grow, and we're here to help you do just that.
