CPDLF senior Karlie Thompson recently job shadowed at the Pittsburgh Zoo. Karlie said “I chose to job shadow at the zoo because I really want to go into conservation of endangered species, rehabilitating sick animals and work in a primate sanctuary.” Karlie explained that she thought it was a great experience. “I learned so many interesting things!” A few things include that some sea urchins have really sharp spines that can prick you just with the force of gravity acting upon them. Starfish invert their stomachs to eat food. They also won't crawl out of their tanks (even though they can) unless the water level has too much ammonia, nitrite or nitrate. Karlie said she can't wait to keep learning about these things in college.
